Gender and Educational Differences in Divorce in South Korea

본 연구는 한국노동패널조사(KLIPS) 자료를 활용하여 최근까지 한국 사회가 경험한 이혼 패턴에서의 변화 양상을 분석하였다. 특히, 성별 및 교육수준별로 이혼 경험이 어떠한 차이를 보이는가를 살펴봄으로써 이혼을 경험하는 집단의 사회경제적 특성에 대한 보다 세부적인 함의를 도출하고자 하였다. 분석 결과는, 첫째, 남성의 경우 교육과 출생코호트 사이에 유의미한 상호적 연관성이 존재함을 보여 주었는데, 과거 출생코호트(1930~1949년생)에 비해 상대적으로 최근 출생코호트(1950~1969년생)의 경우 교육수준이 낮을수록 이혼 리스크가 더욱 높아지는 패턴이 관측되었다. 둘째, 여성의 경우 교육과 이혼 리스크 사이의 연관성은 혼인기간에 따라 유의미한 변이를 보였는데, 혼인 생애과정의 초기 단계에서는 교육수준이 낮을수록 이혼 해저드가 높았지만 혼인기간이 길어짐에 따라 교육수준이 높을수록 이혼 해저드가 높아지는 반대 현상이 관측되었다. 마지막으로 분석 결과는 남성과 여성 모두 이혼 해저드의 혼인기간별 패턴에 있어서 출생코호트를 가로질러 유의미한 변화가 있었음을 보여 주었다. 혼인기간별 큰 변화가 없는 과거 출생코호트(1930~1949년생)에 비해 상대적으로 최근 출생코호트(1950~1969년생)의 이혼 해저드는 혼인 생애과정의 초기 단계에서는 상승하다가 일정한 기간이 경과한 이후 감소하는 뚜렷한 비선형적인 패턴을 보여 주었다.
Using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS), this study analyzes the dynamics of gender and educational differences in divorce in South Korea. First, the results indicate that the effect of education varies across birth cohorts for men. Compared to the older birth cohort(1930~1949), the effect of education becomes stronger among the recent birth cohort(1950~1969). Second, while men with higher education show significantly lower risks of divorce than poorly educated men, women's divorce risks significantly vary across marital duration. Women's education impedes marital dissolution in the early stage of the marital life course but, as marriages age, the effect of women's education on the risk of divorce turns positive. Finally, for both men and women, the divorce risks over marital duration significantly differ across birth cohorts. Compared to the older birth cohort(1930~1949), the recent birth cohort(1950~1969) shows the risk of divorce initially increasing and decreasing during the latter part of the observation period.
