Social Support Network and Welfare of the Elderly in Korea: Research Trends and Future Tasks

1970년대 서구에서 사회적 관계망의 개념이 사회복지 연구에 도입된 이후 한국에서는 1990년대에 이르러 사회적 관계망과 노인의 심리적, 신체적 건강과의 관계에 대한 연구가 활성화되었다. 본 연구의 목적은 노인의 사회적 관계망에 관한 기존 연구의 내용 분석을 통해, 그간의 연구 동향을 정리하고 향후의 연구 방향을 제시하는 데 있다. 기존 연구 결과에 따르면 사회적 관계망을 통한 원조와 지원의 제공이 노인의 건강과 심리적 복지 향상에 직간접적으로 긍정적 기여를 하고 있음을 보여주고 있으며, 다양한 지표와 분석방법을 활용한 연구의 축적으로 사회적 관계망의 중요성에 대한 인식은 거의 보편화되고 있는 단계에 이르렀다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사회적 관계망의 개념을 활용한 더욱 심화된 연구를 위해 아래의 제언을 하고자 한다. 첫째, 연구의 대상을 성별, 연령대별, 소득계층, 거주지역 등의 특성으로 세분화하여 연구할 필요가 있으며, 둘째, 사회적 지지의 구조적 기능적 측면에 대한 연구를 확대해 사회적 관계망의 긍정적 효과뿐 아니라 부정적 상호작용에 대해서도 관심을 가져야 할 것이고, 셋째, 사회적 관계망을 통해 사회적 지지가 형성, 축소 또는 확대되는 과정에 대한 보다 심층적인 분석이 요청되며, 넷째, 사회적 지지의 주효과 뿐만 아니라 매개효과 및 조절효과에 대한 연구를 확대해야 할 것으로 보인다.
After the notion of social support network was introduced to the field of social work in the 1970s in western countries, the impact of social support network on the psychological and physical well-being of the elderly has been extensively studied since the 1990s in Korea. It has been repeatedly pointed out that there exists a meaningfully positive relationship between the provision of support via social network and improvement of the mental and physical health of the elderly. However, according to the results from the content analysis of previous research conducted in the field of social work over the past two decades in Korea, it was found that further studies are needed to exploit fully the relationship between social support network and welfare of the elderly. Future studies need to analyze the diversity of social network of elderly based upon their sex, age, income, living area and other characteristics. More attention needs to be paid to the structural dimension of social support network, and its negative aspect as well. The process of creation of social support within social network and its diminishing and expanding mechanisms need in-depth investigation. Moreover, the mediating and moderating effects of social support on health and well-being of elderly need further research as well.
