Single Mothers’ Lived Experience As Former Residents of Welfare Facility

본 연구는 한부모가족 여성가구주들이 복지시설 퇴소 후 인식한 시설생활의 의미를 밝히고자 van Manen의 해석학적 현상학 연구로 접근했다. 체험된 공간성으로는 ‘낙인의 집으로 떠밀려 들어옴’, ‘공동생활의 규제로 불편한 곳’, ‘생존전략을 구사하여 자기 위치를 공고히 함’, ‘마음의 뿌리를 내린 곳’의 주제들이 드러났다. 본질적 주제는 ‘떠밀려 들어온 곳에서 자기 위치를 공고히 하여 마음의 뿌리를 내림’이 도출되었다. 체험된 신체성으로는 ‘시설의 품에서 보살핌을 받음’, ‘마음에 묻어두었던 모성의 발현’, ‘자녀의 버팀목이 되고자 다시 일어섬’의 주제들이 드러났다. 본질적 주제는 ‘시설의 보살핌을 받고 모성역량이 강화되어 가장으로 다시 일어섬’이 도출되었다. 체험된 관계성으로는 ‘스쳐 지나가는 이웃 속에 따로 놀기’, ‘이웃 간에 구별짓기로 위안을 삼음’, ‘이웃과의 소통에서 자기발견’, ‘더불어 살아가는 존재’의 주제들이 드러났다. 본질적 주제는 ‘이웃과의 소통에서 자기를 발견하고 더불어 살아감’이 도출되었다. 체험된 시간성으로는 ‘세상에서 철회하여 도움에 안주함’, ‘기회를 잡고 변화를 모색함’, ‘안정적인 일상으로 회복함’의 주제들이 드러났다. 본질적 주제는 ‘도움에 안주하는 연약한 존재에서 안정적인 일상으로 회복함’이 도출되었다. 한부모가족 여성가구주의 시설체험의 본질은 ‘시설에 떠밀려 들어와 도움에 의지하는 연약한 존재에서 모성역량이 강화되어 안정적인 일상을 회복하고 가족과 이웃이 더불어 살아가는 존재로 변화’하는 질적 전이의 과정으로 해석되었다.
This study, using a hermeneutic phenomenology by van Manen, explored the meaning of what it is like to live in a welfare facility perceived by former single mother residents. Research findings are as follows. Spatiality has themes like ‘being pushed into a house of stigma’, ‘a place with regulations for communal life’, ‘consolidating one’s position by devising survival strategy’, and ‘coming to anchor in mind.’ The essential theme for spatiality was ‘coming to anchor in mind by consolidating one’s position after being pushed into a unwanted place.’ Corporeality has themes like ‘taken into the arms of institutional care’, ‘manifestation of hidden motherhood’, and ‘standing up again as a mainstay of children.’ The essential theme for corporeality was ‘standing up again as a head of the family by empowering motherhood after receiving an institutional care.’ Relationality has themes like ‘avoiding neighborhood’, ‘finding consolation in distinction from neighbors’, ‘discovering the self through communication with neighbors’, and ‘living together with family and neighborhood.’ The essential theme for relationality was ‘discovering the self through communication with neighbors, and living together.’ Temporality has themes like ‘retracting from the world and remaining complacent with the help’, ‘seeking for a change and taking the opportunity’, and ‘recovering a stable daily life.’ The essential theme for temporality was ‘recovering a stable daily life from a vulnerable figure who remained complacent with the help.’ Finally, the essence of lived experience of single mothers as former residents of welfare facility was a process of bringing qualitative ‘change from a vulnerable figure depending on institutional help into the new self living together with family and neighborhood after recovering a stable daily life through empowerment of motherhood.’
