A Study of the Structural Changes of Aging in Germany

본 연구의 목적은 독일의 노인구조변화(Strukturwandel des Alters)를 분석하고 나아가 노인구조변화에 대한 연구가 나아가야 할 방향에 대한 시사점을 얻는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 텝스의 노인구조변화 분석을 중심으로 1970년대 이후, 특히 그의 연구가 발표된 1993년도 이후부터 2005년도까지의 주요 노년관련 문헌들을 분석하였다. 노인구조변화에 대한 분석은 텝스의 분석방법을 응용하여 첫째, 삶의 진행과정에서 나타난 개인적이고 집합적인 노인구조변화를 통시적으로 고찰함으로써 하였고, 둘째, 현재 처해있는 노인생활실태의 형성원인을 사회구조적 차원에서 공시적으로 고찰함으로써 하였다. 전자의 방법에 의한 분석결과 젊어짐, 여성화, 독거화, 초고령화의 현상이 노인구조변화로서 밝혀졌다. 그리고 후자의 방법에 의한 분석결과 수준변화, 사회적 불평등, 지역성, 탈직업화 및 조기퇴직화, 긍정적인 노년과 부정적인 노년의 현상이 노인구조변화로서 밝혀졌다. 이러한 노인구조변화에 대한 분석을 통해 독일의 노인구조가 한편으로는 긍정적으로 변화되었고, 다른 한편으로는 양극화 및 다원화되어 복잡한 양상을 보이는 것으로서 밝혀졌다. 본 연구의 의의는 2005년도까지의 노년에 대한 주요 연구문헌을 분석함으로써 현재에 이르기까지의 노인구조변화를 총망라하는 분석을 했고, 나아가 사회발전의 결과물로서의 노년뿐만 아니라 사회적 변화를 주도하는 결정요인으로서의 노년도 연구해야 함을 제시하여 노인구조변화에 대한 분석이 나아가야 할 방향에 시사점을 제공했다는 점에 있다.
The purpose of the present study was to analyze the structural changes of aging in Germany and to suggest future directions toward which further research may be conducted regarding the structural changes associated with aging. For this purpose, the current article primarily reviewed literature on aging from 1993 to 2005 on the basis of Tews' analyses of the structural changes of aging in the 1970s. Using Tew's analysis, the current study was concerned with: 1) investigating the structural changes of aging that are deemed to be individual versus collective in the process of one's life on a diachronic level; 2) investigating the ways in which life circumstances of the elderly have been formed on a synchronic level, from a sociostructural perspective. As the structural changes of aging, the former helped to identify rejuvenation, feminization, solitude in life, and a highly dense population of the elderly as significant emerging issues, while the latter dealt with changes in living standards, social inequality, locality, professional displacement, and early retirement, as well as various positive and negative aspects of aging. This analysis of the structural changes of aging enabled the researcher to characterize the aging structure in Germany not only in terms of overall positive changes made on the one hand, but also as a complex of polarization and pluralization on the other.
Through a comprehensive literature review on aging, especially on the structural changes of aging, up to the year 2005, the current study implied that aging as a product of social development and a determinant on social changes deserves researchers' attention in the future. More significantly, this paper also offered implications pertinent to research directions in which professionals' efforts can be invested in pursuit of the structural changes of aging.
