Life Environments and Volunteering among Older Adults: Focused on Money Volunteering

본 논문은 노인의 자원봉사활동 참여와 빈도는 다른 연령집단에 비해서 생활환경의 영향력에 민감하다는 문제의식을 갖고 시작하였다. 따라서 본 연구목적은 노년기 생활환경과 현금기부 자원봉사활동과의 관계성을 밝히고, 이 관계를 개인-환경의 상호작용과정에서 출현하는 거주지 소속감(belonging)과 행위주체성(agency)의 개념으로 설명하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 2009년 통계청 사회의식조사 자료에서 중 고령자 표본 10,268 명을 추출하여 분석에 사용하였다. 이항 로짓 모형과 토빗(Tobit)모형의 분석 결과는 종속변수인 현금기부 자원봉사 참여는 모든 생활환경 변수와 정의 상관을, 그리고 또 다른 종속변수, 연간 기부 횟수는 사회적 환경과 정의 상관을 갖고 있음을 보여주고 있었다. 이 결과들은 현금기부 자원봉사활동 참여는 개인-환경 상호작용 과정에서 오랜 거주지 경험으로 출현하는 소속감과, 행위주체성이 상호작용하여 개인의 정체성과 자율성을 향상시키고, 그 결과 자원봉사참여가 촉진 되는 것으로 해석하였다. 한편 분석결과는 정책영역에서 장기적으로 중 고령자의 생활환경 개선이 노인의 사회참여 촉진에 기여한다는 것을 함의하며, 이론적으로는 노인의 자원봉사활동 연구에서 환경변수의 중요성을 함축한다.
The paper intends to determine the effects of environments or contexts on volunteering among older adults and explain the why under assumptions of environmental theory on aging. This paper makes attempts to apply concepts, Belonging and Agency to person-environments(p-e) interaction. For the purpose, the study uses 2009 Statistics Korea data of Korean Social Survey and selects a sample of 10,268 people who are more than 55 years old. The Binary Logit model and Tobit model results show that a dependent variable, money volunteering participation is positively related to all environmental variables in statistically meaningful level(p<.000). Also, another dependent variable, yearly frequency of money volunteering is positively related to social environmental variables in statistically meaningful level, but the study fail to find statistically meaningful relationships between the latter dependent variable and residence environment variables. Under the thesis of environmental theory on aging the results are interpreted as follows. Money volunteering among the older people is promoted by identity and autonomy which become formed by Belonging and Agency which are emergent in the process of p-e interaction and as result of long aging in place. This suggests that civic engagement among senior citizens can be improved by bettering environmental conditions in place and environmental variables are considered to be important in the future volunteering studies.
