Environmental Approaches to Volunteerism Among Older Adults: Promoting Volunteer Participation

본 논문은 노년기 환경의 중요성을 인식하여 자원봉사 참여에 대한 환경효과를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 최근 10년 동안 노인자원봉사 참여에 대한 연구가 북미를 중심으로 폭발적으로 증가하였지만 노인의 장소애착과 통제에서 보이는 환경의 영향에 대한 관심은 아직 미미하다. 따라서 본 연구는 자원봉사에 대한 환경 효과를 규명하고 환경 노년학 이론을 통하여 설명하고자 한다. 이 목적을 위해 가장 최근의 2011년 통계청 사회조사 자료를 이용하였고 65세 이상 노인 6,633명을 대상으로 봉사 참여에 환경이 어떤 효과가 있는 지 이항 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실행하여 추정하였다. 분석결과 5개 환경 군의 변수들이 봉사 참여에 대하여 통계적으로 유의한 정의효과(+)가 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 주거 환경 변수 중 다세대 주택의 효과가 가장 컸고, 가구환경 가운데는 1세대 가구가 가장 큰 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 지역 환경(예, 수도권, 강원 충청, 영호남 등)은 영남권의 참여 효과가 가장 컸다. 직업 환경 가운데는 사무직의 영향력이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과는 오랜 거주 경험으로 생성되는 환경 귀속감과 환경 통제 행위 주체성 발현의 결과로서 설명하였다. 동시에 이 결과는 한 장소에서의 노화, 환경 노년학, 사회복지학 이론에 경험적 지지를 함축하며, 자원봉사 실천에는 거주지 단위에 서부터 지역 단위에 거시적 정책의 가능성과 복지정책의 확대, 노인 친화적 도시개발 등의 정책이 자원봉사 참여를 증가시킴을 시사한다.
The paper aims to examine the effects of environment on volunteer participation among Korean older adults. In last decades, there have been many studies which investigate volunteer participation of older persons. However, there are very few researches to determine the environmental effects on volunteering. For the purpose, the thesis uses the data of national social survey by Statistics Korea, executed in 2011. As samples, 6,633 older people above 65 year age is finally analyzed. This paper uses binomial logistic regression model to estimate the effects of environmental factors on volunteering. The results show that five groups of environmental variables appeared to be related to volunteer participation. Specifically, among residential environmental variables, a multi-household house was strongest in influence to the dependent variable. Among household environmental variables, one generation household was biggest. Among region variables, south-east region(Young-nam) of Korea came to be the most influential to elderly volunteer participation. These results suggest that life environments surrounding older people in local community influence them to participate volunteerism. The paper proposes as a conclusion that elderly-friendly environments such as easy-access housing, barrier-free urban design, utility facilities for older people solidify belonging and agency, and in turn, they boost identity and autonomy so that older adults take participation into volunteerism. Also, the paper suggests policy alternatives to promote volunteering among senior citizens.
