본 연구는 손자녀를 돌보는 조부모가 그들의 행위를 통해 이후 자신의 성인 자녀와의 호혜적 관계를 기대하는지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 손자녀 돌봄 지속 유형을 그 지속 기간에 따라 지속 돌봄과 일시 돌봄으로 구분한 후, 각 유형이 조부모가 가지고 있는 자녀로부터의 경제적 지원 기대에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴보았다. 분석결과, 동일한 자녀의 손자녀를 지속적으로 돌보는 조부모일수록 이후 해당 성인 자녀로부터의 경제적 지원을 더 기대하는 것으로 나타났다. 더불어 손자녀 돌봄을 통한 성인 자녀와의 호혜적 관계에 대한 기대는 65세 미만의 비노년층 조부모에게서만 엿볼 수 있는 것이었다. 이러한 결과들은 조부모세대에게 그동안 규범적인 행위로 여겨지던 손자녀 돌봄이 세대 간의 호혜적 관계를 기대하게 하는 보험적 성격의 자원으로 인식될 가능성이 있음을 보여준다. 또한 이러한 인식의 변화가 시간의 흐름에 따라 보다 강화된 모습을 보일 가능성이 있음을 암시한다. 본 연구는 이러한 결과들을 바탕으로 이론적, 정책적 함의를 제시하였다.
The purpose of this study is to explore how providing care for grandchildren affects grandparents’ expectations for a reciprocal relationship with their adult children. This is done by examining how the duration of providing care influences the financial support expectations from the adult children for whom they are providing child care. In this study, providing care is categorized into two types: contingent providing care and continuous providing care. The results indicate that grandparents providing care to their grandchildren constantly are more likely to expect financial support from their adult children than grandparents providing care to their grandchildren temporarily. Additionally, this trend is only shown in grandparents less than 65 years old. These results suggest that grandparents nowadays are more likely to recognize providing care for their grandchildren, previously considered as a normative behavior, as an insurance in a reciprocal relationship between two generations. Findings also indicate that this tendency will become more prominent with time. These findings have implications for theorizing about reciprocal relationship expectations between grandparents and their adult children, and provide viable framework for policies.
