The association between depression of the elderly and their multiple roles: Role Complementary perspective and Role enhancement perspective

본 논문은 2014년 전국노인실태조사를 활용하여 노인의 경제적 활동과 사회적 활동의 상호작용이 우울과 어떤 관계에 있는지 분석하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 우리나라는 노인취업률이 높지만(32.0%), 취업을 제외한 비경제영역의 사회활동 참여율은 57.5%에 불과하였다. 노인의 42.5%는 지난 1년 간 사회활동을 전혀 하지 않은 것이다. 우리나라 노인의 사회참여가 상당히 낮은 실태를 말해준다. 둘째 사회활동의 조합으로 보면, 경제적 활동과 사회적 활동은 정적인 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타나 역할보완관점을 지지한다. 셋째, 사회활동에 따라 우울수준이 다르게 나타났다. 경제적 활동과 사회적 활동을 같이 하는 노인의 우울증이 15.9%로 가장 낮은 반면, 어떤 사회활동도 하지 않는 노인은 54.7%에 이르러 심각한 수준이었다. 넷째, 회귀분석결과 경제적 활동과 사회적 활동의 상호작용항이 유의하게 나타나 역할강화관점을 지지하였다. 노인의 경제적 활동과 사회적 활동을 분절적으로 지원하기 보다는 통합적인 정책을 실시하는 것이 노인복지 향상에 더 크게 기여할 것으로 판단된다.
This research analyzed the interactional effect of paid-work and non-paid social activities on depression in older adults. Data from the 2014 Older Adults' Life Survey implemented by South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare is analyzed. 32.0% of the elderly population is engaging in paid work, and 57.5% participates in unpaid social activities. 42.5% of the older adults did not participate in any social activity during the previous year. The degree of depression in the older adults varied in relation to different levels of social activity, as expected from literature review. Incidence of depression in the older adults who participated in both paid-work and non-paid social activities was the lowest among the 4 groups (15.9%), and depression rate of the older adults who did not participate either in paid-work or non-paid social activities was the highest among the 4 groups (54.7%). The result of the regression analysis also discovered that the interaction term of paid-work and non-paid social activities had a significant impact on depression in the older adults, supporting the role enhancement perspective. Policy suggestions on integrating paid-work and non-paid social activities rather than segmented policy to improve well-being of later life of the elderly are provided.
