Prisoners’ Experiences of In-Prison Drug Rehabilitation Programs

약물사용문제가 심각한 사회문제로 대두되고 있지만 대처는 매우 미흡하며, 근거를 제공할 수 있는 관련 연구 또한 매우 부족하다. 특히 교도소의 경우 극소수만이 참여하는 약물재활교육 외에 약물 관련 서비스가 부재한 실정이다. 그 결과는 재범 재발로 인한 교도소 수용의 악순환으로 이어지고 있어 약물사용문제가 있는 교도소 수용자에 대한 적극적이고 효과적 개입방안의 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 약물사용문제로 교도소에 수용된 사람들의 약물재활교육 참여 경험을 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 수용 기간 동안 약물재활교육에 참여했던 6명을 대상으로 심층면접한 자료를 분석하였다. 그 결과 재활교육에서의 이중적 태도와 덧씌워진 낙인에서 오는 혼란, 두 영역에서 6개의 상위범주와 14개의 하위범주가 도출되었다. 수형자들은 당위적 현실적 동기로 약물재활교육에 참여한다. 하지만 약물사용자 및 범죄자라는 이중적 낙인, 사회와 분리된 수형생활 및 타 수형자와의 모순된 관계 등 교도소 환경의 불안정성이 출소 후 단약과 재활의지에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 교도소 내에서 약물문제에 대한 개입을 위해 고려해야 할 정책적 실천적 제언을 제시했다.
Drug use is becoming a serious social problem, but coping is very poor, and related research that can provide evidence is also very scarce. In particular, there are no services for drug users in prison, except for rehabilitation programs. The result is a vicious cycle of prison reentry due to relapse and recidivism. Therefore, there is a need for active and effective interventions for prisoners with drug use problems. The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of drug users in participating in prison-based drug rehabilitation programs due to drug use problems. For this purpose, the qualitative data obtained from 6 interviewees who participated in the program were analyzed. As a result, 6 categories and 14 subcategories in the areas of stigma and double attitudes were extracted. Inmates of this study participated in drug rehabilitation programs with realistic motives. However, it was found that stigma associated with them as drug abusers as well as criminals, being separated from society, and fake relationships with other inmates had effects on participants’ sobriety and willingness to recover. Finally, several suggestions for in-prison drug rehabilitation programs were made.
