The Development of the Psycho-Social Adaptation Program for North Korean Refugee Children and Parents in South Korea

최근에 북한이탈이주민 가족이 급증하면서 이들의 남한에서의 심리사회적 적응을 돕기 위하여 부모교육의 필요성이 부각되고 있다. 본 연구는 탈북아동과 부모들이 남한사회 정착과정에서 사회적 적응과 관련하여 그들이 인식하는 갈등의 문제를 진단하고, 탈북 부모를 대상으로 사회적 적응 프로그램을 개발, 실시하여 그 효과성을 검증하였다. 탈북아동과 부모를 대상으로 심층면접과 프로그램을 실시한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 탈북아동과 부모를 심층 면접한 결과 탈북아동은 남한 아동과 언어적인 차이로 친구관계가 가장 어렵다고 표현했으며 탈북 부모들은 새로운 환경에 적응하느라 힘들고, 경제적으로 넉넉하지 않으므로 자녀의 학업을 위한 효과적인 지원을 해주지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 탈북 부모를 위한 적응프로그램은 실시전과 실시 후의 결과에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타나 부모교육프로그램에 대한 평가는 매우 높은 것으로 나타났다.
Recently, an increasing number of North Korean defectors families is entering The Republic of Korea. The purpose of this study was to describe and identify problems which North Korean refugee children and parents experience in the process of social adjustment to South Korea. The data were collected by in-depth interview and analyzed qualitatively. The findings of the study are as follows:
(a) The results indicate that North Korean refugee youths and their parents have difficulties in adaptation. They have problems in detail such as insufficient learning proficiency, confusion in curriculum and different education system, difficulty in making a friend, language heterogeneity, and cultural gap. They also experience difficulty in parent-child communication which sometimes results in the destruction of the family. (b) The statistic of this study demonstrates that a meaningful difference exists between the adaption ability of the participants before the program and that after the program. As a result, the psycho-social adjustment program was proved to be effective on improving the psycho-social adjustment of the subjects.
