An Ethnography on the Community of Intercountry Adoptive Families Adopting Korean Children

이 연구의 목적은 한국아동을 입양한 해외입양가족들로 구성된 입양공동체의 문화를 이해하고자 하는 것 이었다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해, 이 연구에서는 문화기술지 연구방법을 활용하였다. 호주 퀸즐랜드주에 거주하는 한국아동 해외입양 가족들로 구성된 입양공동체, AKFG를 대상으로 한 참여관찰과 입양부모 9쌍을 대상으로 한 심층면접, 온라인 웹사이트와 커뮤니티, 호주정부의 공식보고서 등 기록물 등을 통해 자료를 수집하였으며, 총체적 문화기술지 접근을 통해 문화적 구조와 패턴을 분석하였다. 연구결과는 크게 네 가지 부분으로 구성되었다. 첫 번째는 입양공동체를 이해하기 위한 큰 맥락으로서 한국-호주간 국제입양체계, 퀸즐랜드주의 공공과 민간 입양체계, 호주의 사회문화적 배경과 입양 관련 역사를 살펴보았다. 두 번째는 한국아동을 입양한 해외입양가족들의 공동체로서 AKFG의 과거와 현재, 미래에 대한 상세한 기술이었다. 세 번째로 살펴본 것은 이들 해외입양가족들이 개별적으로 경험하면서 모두가 공유하고 있는 것으로서 결국 AKFG를 유지하게 만드는 강력한 동기인, 국제입양절차에서 경험하는 어려움, 한국문화에 대한 공유와 자녀의 정체성에 대한 고민, 자녀 양육에 대한 정보제공과 지지 등이었다. 마지막으로는 AKFG 구성원들이 공유하는 문화적 패턴을 제시하고자 하였는데, 그것은 호주라는 다문화사회에서 국제입양가족으로서 또는 국제입양인으로서 독특한 정체성을 형성해 가면서 건강한 하나의 가족으로 살아가기 위해 해외입양공동체라는 이름의 가족공동체를 유지해가는 것이었다. 이러한 연구결과에 근거하여 정책과 실천 지침들을 제언하였으며, 연구의 한계를 극복하고 더 풍부한 정보를 확보하기 위해 필요한 후속연구들에 대해서도 제언하였다.
The purpose of this study was to understand the culture of adoptive community(Australian-Korean Friendship Group, AKFG) composed of intercountry adoptive families adopting Korean children. To achieve this purpose, researcher used the ethnographic research approach. Data were collected from participant observation for AKFG, in-depth interview with 9 intercountry adoptive parents, on-line website and community service site, and various documents. Researcher analysed these data by traditional ethnographic approach and found the cultural themes and patterns. Results are constructed as follows: First, the intercountry adoption system between Korea and Australia, public and private adoption system in Queensland, and Australian socio-cultural background including history of adoption, Second, past, present and future of AKFG, Third, individual and shared needs such as difficulties in formal intercountry adoption process, learning and sharing the Korean culture, and rearing the adoptive children, forth, cultural pattern, that is, living as a health family and forming the unique identity as an intercountry adoptive family or intercountry adoptee in multi-cultural society of Australia. Based on the results, researcher provided the policy and practical guidelines for supporting the intercountry adoptive families. Necessary follow-up studies were also proposed to overcome the limitations of this study and to ensure more extensive information on families adopting korean children.
