How do Married Immigrant Women in Korea determine their Role as a Mother? -A Grounded Theory Approach-

본 연구는 한국사회의 결혼이주여성들이 자녀를 키우면서 사회적 돌봄 및 공적 교육제도와의 접점에서 어머니로서 자신의 역할을 어떻게 찾아가고 정립해 나가는지를 심층적으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 결혼이주여성으로서 자녀를 양육하고 있고 있는 결혼이주여성 8명을 대상으로 심층면접을 실시하여 질적 연구를 수행하였다. 녹취된 자료는 근거이론 분석방법에 의하여 분석되었다. 분석결과, 중심현상은 ‘낯선 곳에서 길잡기’로 나타났다. 이러한 중심현상은 ‘사회적 참여’와 ‘불리하지 않기 위한 준비’라는 인과적 조건의 영향을 받으며, 맥락적 조건은 ‘교육역량’과 ‘주변의 인식’으로 나타났다. 작용/상호작용 전략은 ‘문화적 배경 활용하기’, ‘한국사회 따라잡기’, ‘버티기’, ‘우호적 환경 만들기’로 나타났고, 이에 영향을 미치는 중재적 조건은 ‘남편과의 관계’와 ‘주변이 도움’과 같은 지지체계로 나타났다. 이러한 작용/상호작용으로 인해 ‘당당하게 키우기’, ‘국제적으로 키우기’, ‘흘러가는대로 키우기’의 3가지 결과가 나타났다. 결혼이주여성들은 낯설고 잘 알지 못하는 상황 가운데에서도 자녀를 위해 최선을 다해 길을 잡아가고 있으며, 주체적으로 어머니 역할을 찾아가는 것으로 나타났다.
The purpose of this study is to acquire an in-depth understanding of how immigrant mothers in Korea determine and establish their role as a mother when encountering the formal social care and education system. A qualitative inquiry approach was selected, and 8 immigrant women who had at least one child involved in social care or formal education system were recruited for in-depth interview. The transcribed material was analyzed using the grounded theory approach. The core phenomenon that immigrant mothers experienced while establishing their mothering role was ‘pathfinding in unfamiliar places’. Its causal conditions were ‘social participation’ and ‘striving not being disadvantaged’. The contextual condition that affected the process was ‘educational competence’ and ‘others’ perception’. The action/interaction strategies employed were ‘actively utilizing own cultural background’, ‘catching up the mainstream’, ‘taking a firm stand’, and ‘creating a favorable environment’. The intervening conditions that influenced the action/ interactions were ‘relationship with husband’ and ‘others’ support’. The process resulted into 3 categories: ‘raising a self-confident person’, ‘rearing internationally’, and ‘going with the flow’. Implications for social work practice are discussed.
