본 연구는 생애 전반에 걸쳐 학대와 폭력을 경험한 여성노인들을 대상으로 학대라는 생애 트라우마를 경험해 가는 과정과 내용을 살펴보고, 지역사회에서 노인학대 예방 및 학대를 경험한 노인들을 지지할 수 있는 사회복지 실천 방안을 논의하고자 하는 목적에서 수행되었다. 본 연구에 자발적으로 참여하기로 동의한 3명의 여성노인을 심층면접하고 Mandelbaum(1973)이 제시한 생애사 연구방법에 따라 연구참여자들의 ‘삶의 영역’, ‘전환점’, ‘적응’의 세 가지 차원을 분석하였다. 분석결과 삶의 영역은 ‘흔적으로만 남은 레질리어스’, 전환점은 ‘전 생애를 관통하는 학대의 역사’, 그리고 적응은 ‘자신의 몸 하나도 건사하지 못하는 적응력’으로 도출되었다. 전 생애과정에서 경험한 학대와 착취는 한 개인의 삶을 총체적으로 붕괴시킬 뿐 아니라 사회적 지지체계의 결여 및 폭력에 짓눌린 레질리언스의 사망 등으로 이어져 사회적 차원으로 확대되어 논의되어야 한다는 것이 밝혀졌다.
This study was carried out to look at the trauma and life coping process of an elderly women who experienced lifetime abuse and violence, and to discuss the practical implications for prevention and supports for abused elderly women. The in-depth interviews were performed with the three elderly women who had consented to participate in this study. Life history study suggested by Mandelbaum(1973) was used and the three areas of the ‘dimension’, ‘turnings’, and ‘adaptation’ were analyzed. These three areas were ‘resilience which remains only trace’, ‘life-long abuse history’, and ‘adaptation which cannot be even taken care of herself’. As revealed by the study results, life time abuse and violence destroyed overall one’s lives, and the lack of social supports and violence-stricken resilience have to be discussed not only in the individual level but also in the societal dimension.
