A Photovoice Study on the Challenges and Desires of Married Migrant Women with School-Aged Children

본 연구는 학령기 자녀를 둔 여성결혼이민자들이 결혼이민자로서, 외국인 엄마로서 고민하는삶의 이야기를 탐색하였다. 총 5명의 여성결혼이민자들이 포토보이스 프로그램(총 7회기)에 참여하여 4개의 대주제를 선정하였고, 직접 촬영한 사진들을 통해 자신의 경험을 나누는 집단토의 활동을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 다음과 같은 하위주제―①나에게 자녀란?(살아가는 이유가되는 존재임, 사회의 시선을 이겨내길 바라는 특별한 존재임, 소중히 지켜주고 싶은 존재임), ②웃음 속에 가려진 상처(가족이 남긴 마음의 상처가 있음, 상처를 치유하기 위해 노력함), ③ 다문화 부부로 산다는 것(남편에게 존중받지 못하는 것이 속상함, 결혼생활에서 벗어나고 싶음, 다시 행복한 가정을 이루기를 소망함), ④타국인 엄마로서 나(남들과 다른 모습의 외계인 엄마임, 자녀에게 엄마가 태어난 나라의 문화를 알리고 싶음, 다문화 자녀들을 위해 자랑스러운엄마가 되고 싶음)―를 도출하였다. 본 연구는 여성결혼이민자들의 학부모로서의 자녀교육 역량 강화, 안정적인 자녀양육 환경 마련, 자녀의 이중문화 이해 증진을 위한 실천방안을 제언하였다.
This study explored the life experiences of married international migrant women with school-aged children in Korean society as both migrant women and foreign mothers. Five participants participated in a photovoice project (seven sessions) wherein they selected four themes and discussed their experiences related to photos they took as a group. Based on thematic analyses of the participants’ group discussions, the following subthemes emerged: (a) what my child means to me (the only reason I live for, being so special that I want them to overcome social stigma, being someone precious whom I want to protect); (b) trauma behind my smile (experiencing trauma from my family, trying to overcome my trauma); (c) living as a multicultural couple (feeling hurt by not being respected by my husband, wanting to escape from marriage, hoping to have a happy married life); and (d) being a foreign mother (being an alien mother with a different appearance than others, desire to introduce the culture of my birth country to my child, desire to be a proud mother for other multicultural generations of children). This study has implications for provision of services to (a) support the role of students’ parents, (b) promote positive environments for parenting children; and (c) increase children’s bicultural identity. Findings can help improve services for married international migrant women by informing realistic recommendations.
