이 연구는 서구에서 발전되어 온 정신보건사회복지실천을 한국 정신보건 현장에 적용하는 과정에서 한국인의 정서적 특성에 대한 충분한 고려가 부족했던 것은 아니었는지 반성적으로 고찰하고, 고유정서인 ‘정’을 고려한 실천방법을 모색하기 위해 진행되었다. 이를 위하여 기존 문헌을 통해 정의 특성을 접착성, 다양성, 소통성, 집합성 및 복지성으로 정리하고, 이런 측면들을 고려할 때, 한국정신보건사회복지실천이 어떤 방식으로 이뤄져야 하는지에 대하여 분석해 보았다. 그 논의의 대상으로는 정신보건사회복지실천의 사정평가, 관계형성, 다양한 개입방법들 및 가치와 윤리 측면 등이 포괄적으로 포함되었다. 이러한 논의들을 통해서 서구 가치관에 기반을 둔 실천방법들을 한국인들의 정서적 특성에 맞게 재해석하였으며, 정을 고려한 실천이 갖는 강점들과 유의할 점들을 제시하였다. 결국 정신보건사회복지실천에서 활용되는 많은 개념과 가치들이 문화적 맥락에 따라 달라질 수 있으므로 문화적으로 보다 신중한 태도와 민감성을 갖고 실천해야한다는 결론을 도출하였다.
The purposes of this study is to reflect whether Korean social workers have fairly considered the unique Korean culture in the process of practicing the social work and to identify the effective strategies for the mental health social work emphasizing Koreans' ethnic sentiment, especially named 'Jeong(情)'. For this purpose, the existing literature is comparatively analysed, and the deeper discussion is unfolded on the basis of the researcher's experience and insight. In this study, it is recognized that 'Jeong' has some special properties : connectedness, diversity, common understanding, collectiveness, and mutual aid. Related to these characteristics, the each mental health social work practice, for example, assessment, relationship, interventions, values, and ethics are reconsidered. Also it examines Korean social workers' self awareness based on these aspects. Through these analysis, mental health social work practice strategies considering Korean ethnic sentiment are examined. Against this background, it is clear that Western values do not have the same effect on the Korean people. Likewise, the social work practice by the Western culture can perform a different function in the Korean culture. In conclusion, the importance of cultural sensitivity cannot be overemphasized when a social workers work with clients in mental health settings.
