An Exploratory Study on the Transcendental Recognition of Successful Aging in Korea

초록
본 연구는 성공적 노화의 구성요인을 객관적으로 모두 갖추지 않을지라도 노후를 성공적으로 잘 보내고 있다고 인식하는 사람들이 있다는 선행연구에 주목하고 한국인의 성공적 노화에 대한 초월적 인식을 실증적으로 밝히고자 탐색적인 연구로 시도되었다. 다단계 층화표본표출법으로 표집된 전국 만 20세 이상 성인 남녀 1,000명을 대상으로 2008년 7월부터 8월까지 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구결과 한국인들은 신체적 건강과 정신 기능, 배우자와의 해로, 자녀와의 원만한 관계, 친밀한 친구의 존재, 경제적 자립, 사회활동, 지역사회에서의 거주와 같은 성공적 노화에 필요한 조건을 충족시키지 못하는 상황적 한계에도 처할지라도 그럼에도 불구하고 노후를 잘 보낼 수 있다는 인식을 지니고 있음이 확인되었다. 성공적 노화에 대한 초월적 인식은 성별, 거주 지역, 학력과 배우자 유무와 같은 개인적 특성에 따라 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 발견되어 자신이 처한 객관적인 상황과 초월적 인식이 관련 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 성공적 노화의 구성요인을 객관적으로 갖추지 못할 경우 실패한 노년으로 규정하는 언론 매체나 노인복지학을 비롯한 노인교육, 또는 노후설계교육 등에 대해 경종을 울리고, 대안적인 시각을 제안하였다는데 의의를 지닌다.
Reviewing literature that people report aging successfully even in the presence of chronic disease and functional disability, this study attempts to examine the transcendental recognition of successful aging. 1,000 subjects aged 20 and over in Korea were sampled using a multi-stage stratified sampling method and data were collected by face-to-face interviews from July to August 2008. The results of this study were as follows: Koreans believe that they will age successfully despite the absence of health, spouses, offspring, friends, social activities, financial security, and aging in place. Significant differences were found in the transcendental recognition of successful aging based on sex, education, region of residence and with/out spouse. Thus, this research has a significance in presenting an alternative perspectives to the media and the gerontological education.
