이 연구는 사회복지학에서 죽음에 대한 응시와 성찰이 왜 필요하며, 그 과정에 질적연구방법이 갖는 유용성을 논의하고 있다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 첫째, 사회복지학에서의 죽음의 개념을 살펴보고, 둘째, 사회적 소통으로서의 죽음의 맥락을 이해하기 위해 한국사회와 죽음의 의미, 죽음의 속성에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 셋째, 사회복지학, 사회복지사와 죽음의 관계에서 나타나는 다양한 이슈들을 논의하고, 이 외에 죽음을 넘어 다루어야 할 현상으로서 상실, 애도, 성장, 인간의 존엄성 등에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 사회복지학에서의 죽음 연구에서 질적연구가 갖는 힘에 대해서 논의하였다. 이를 토대로 이 연구는 사회복지학에서 죽음에 대한 연구가 보다 포괄적이고 적극적으로 이루어져야 함을 제기하고 있다.
This study attempts to examine why the gaze and reflection on death in social welfare studies needs and discusses using a qualitative research method. The main contents of this study are as follows. First, this study examines the concepts, characteristics, and relevant literatures on death in social welfare studies. Second, this study attempts to explain the contexts and the meaning of death in Korean society as a social communication. Third, this study discusses diverse issues in the contexts of social welfare, social workers, and death. In addition, this study examines the concepts of loss, grief, growth after trauma, and human dignity as a phenomenon related to death. Finally, this study discusses utilities of qualitative research methods in social work research on death. This study suggests that death in social welfare situations be considered more sincerely and actively in order to better develop and improve social work practices and policies in Korea.
