Discrimination Experience and Life Satisfaction among Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities : Moderating Effect of Human Rights Friendly Service Use Experience

본 연구의 목적은 (1) 정신장애인의 차별 경험과 삶의 만족도 사이의 관계를 살펴보고, (2) 서비스 이용과정 상의 인권 친화적 서비스 경험 정도에 따라 차별 경험이 삶의 만족도에 미치 는 영향이 달라지는지 살펴보는 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 연구목적 달성을 위해 정신장애인 299명에 대한 횡단면 조사자료를, Process Macro 조절효과 모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. (1) 정신장애인의 차별 경험은 그들의 삶의 만족도를 낮추는 주요 한 요인인 것으로 나타났다. (2) 정신장애인의 차별 경험이 삶의 만족도에 미치는 부정적인 영향은 인권 친화적 서비스 경험 정도에 따라 달라져 인권 친화적 서비스가 완충적인 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 인권 친화적 서비스 이용 경험이 낮은 이용자들은 차별 경험이 많 을수록 삶의 만족도가 유의미하게 낮았지만, 인권 친화적 서비스 이용 경험이 높은 이용자들 사이에서는 차별 경험 정도가 삶의 질에 미치는 영향은 유의하지 않아서, 인권 친화적 서비스 가 보호요인 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 기반으로 정신장애인의 차별과 삶 의 질 개선을 위한 보호요인으로서 인권 친화적 서비스 제공의 필요성에 대한 실천적, 정책적 함의를 논의하였다.
The purpose of this study is to (1) examine the relationship between discrimination experience and life satisfaction among individuals with psychiatric disabilities, and (2) examine whether the effect of discrimination on life satisfaction depends on the degree of human rights-friendly service experience. For these purposes, we analyzed the cross-sectional survey data of 299 psychiatric consumers. The main findings are as follows. (1) The discrimination experience of persons with mental disabilities was a major factor in reducing their life satisfaction. (2) The negative effects of discrimination experience on life satisfaction varied by the degree of human rights-friendly service experience, indicating that human rights-friendly services have a moderating effect. Specifically, consumers with less experience in human rights-friendly services presented significantly lower life satisfaction, but among those with higher levels of human rights-friendly service experience, the impact of discrimination on life satisfaction was not significant. Based on these results, we discussed implications for practice and policy to provide human rights-friendly services as a protective factor for improving consumers’ human rights and life satisfaction.
